Cougars Complete First Day at Pacific-10 Championship

PULLMAN, Wash. - Marina Nicolas advanced in the invitational bracket Thursday, before suffering a tough loss in the round of 16 at the Pacific-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif.
WSU sent three student-athletes to the 32 participant championship bracket, which was compiled of the top three players of every Pac-10 team with the remaining players selected upon by the coaches. Sophomore Ekaterina Kamendova drew No. 76 Denise Dy of Washington, but fell, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Aleksandra Cekic also competed in the top flight, but fell to the Huskies Samantha Smith, 6-1, 6-2. The final competitor in the championship bracket was freshman Elisabeth Fournier who suffered a first day loss to UCLA's 14th-ranked Yasmin Schnack, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, 6-1, 6-1.
The Cougars also sent their remaining three players into the invitational bracket. Marina Nicolas was the lone Cougar to pick up a victory and advance past the first round. Frist, Nicolas downed Jane Huh from Arizona in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, the WSU sophomore suffered a tough loss to Stanford's Logan Hansen, 6-3, 6-1, to knock her out of contention for a championship.
The Cougars compete in Friday's doubles rounds beginning at 9 a.m., in their quest of a Pac-10 Championship. The Pac-10 championships run through Sunday, April 26.
