Fink, Andrews Advance To Pac-10 Quarterfinals

April 23, 2009

OJAI, CALIF. -- The USC women's tennis team got individual action underway in Ojai, Calif., today in the first day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships. Singles was the name of the game on Thursday, and two Women of Troy were able to pocket a pair of wins on the day in order to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal play. Playing in the Championship Singles bracket, senior Amanda Fink grabbed a three-setter and a straight-set win to advance to a quarterfinal bout tomorrow (April 24) with Stanford's #84 Jessica Nguyen. Meanwhile, on the Invitational side of things, sophomore Cristala Andrews notched two decisive wins to also move into quarterfinal play. Doubles action will also start up tomorrow with Round of 16 matches kicking off in the afternoon.

The USC women had three players setting up for Championship Singles play in Ojai. #78 junior Gabriela Niculescu came up on the losing end of a long three-set battle with ASU's Michelle Brycki to bow out of the race toward a Pac-10 title. USC freshman #68 Alison Ramos opened up her first Pac-10 Championships with a 7-5, 6-2 upset of ASU's #40 Nadia Abdala to advance to the Round of 16. There, Ramos fell in a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Stanford's Veronica Li. That left #27 Amanda Fink as USC's lone challenger for the Pac-10 singles crown. The senior first pulled out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 comeback win over UCLA's #56 Andrea Remynse in the first round, building some steam for the Round of 16 and a 6-3, 6-4 win over Washington's #76 Denise Dy. That puts Fink on a track to tomorrow's semifinals as she aims to make a repeat trip to the Pac-10 singles title match.

In Invitational action, three more Women of Troy were competing in Ojai. Freshman Elizabeth Marsico fell in her match with Anna-Victoria Lind of UCLA, 6-3, 6-1 during the first round. Sophomore Lyndsay Kinstler knocked down Arizona's Debora Castany 6-2, 6-3 in her first-round match, but missed out on a three-setter with Cal's Marian Ravelojaona with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 defeat in the Round of 16. Powering through her opponents on the day was sophomore Cristala Andrews. She delivered a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Washington State's Jessica Casebier to open things up before taking down Ariane Massachelein 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 16 to punch her ticket to tomorrow's quarterfinals. There, Andrews will face UCLA's Stephanie Wetmore in a noon match in Ojai.
