Bobusic and Cossou Advance to Pac-10 Singles Quarterfinal

No. 28-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Marina Cossou and No. 30-ranked senior Bojana Bobusic each advanced to the singles quarterfinal round at the Pac-10 Tennis Championships with two wins apiece today at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. Along with No. 54-ranked senior Claire Ilcinkas, the Golden Bears pushed three into the singles round of 16 on the first day of play and will be represented by two more players in the singles invitational quarterfinal; senior Marion Ravelojaona and freshman Stephany Chang.
In the opening round, Ilcinkas defeated No. 104-ranked Maya Johansson of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1. Cossou took out Washington's Lina Xu with ease in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat and Bobusic claimed a three-set come-from-behind victory against No. 75-ranked Lindsay Burdette of Stanford, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Mari Andersson was unable to advance as she succumbed to a 6-2, 6-3 loss at the hands of No. 84-ranked Jessica Nguyen of Stanford.
On to the round of 16, Cossou continued her steady play as she dispatched of Arizona State's Michelle Brycki, 6-3, 6-4. Bobusic then got her 35th singles win of the year in a strong 6-4, 6-4 win against Nina Pantic of UCLA to set the Bears up with a pair of singles quarterfinalists. Also recording a 6-4, 6-4 score, Ilcinkas could not escape the round of 16 however, as she fell to No. 5-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford. Cossou and Bobusic will each be in action tomorrow (April 24) at noon.
In the singles invitational tournament, freshman Catalina Visico dropped her first set, 6-0 to Isamarie Perez of Stanford but bounced back to stay on pace with Perez in the second before falling, 6-4. After receiving first-round byes, Ravelojaona and Chang each fought their way to quarterfinal appearances. Ravelojaona notched a three-set win (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) against USC's Lyndsay Kinstler and Chang took home a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Arizona's Claire Rietsch. Chang and Ravelojaona will play at noon tomorrow in singles invitational quarterfinal matches.
Play resumes tomorrow (April 24) with singles quarterfinals and the round of 16 and quarterfinals of doubles play. The No. 8-ranked Bears (17-4, 7-1 Pac-10) completed the dual season on a six-match winning streak and await seeding into the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships.
