April 24, 2009
STANFORD, CALIF. -
The California Golden Bears are tied for fourth place after the first round of the Pac-10 Championships, being played at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford. Pia Halbig is tied for ninth place after the first full day of action.
The Bears opened the Championships with a very solid first round, posting a 298 team score, just seven shots behind UCLA, the leaders after day one. The Bears were tied with the Arizona Wildcats for fourth place and were four strokes up on Stanford, who finished the first day's action in sixth place. The 6,148 yard, par-71 tournament is being played on Stanford's home course, the Stanford Golf Course, on the campus of Stanford University.
The Bears were led by Pia Halbi who shot a two-over to end in a tie for ninth place. Halbig is three shots behind Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda and USC's Jennifer Strong, who each shot one under to lead the field. Just one stroke back of Halbi are her teammates, seniors Allison Goodman and Shannon Yocum. Each shot a 74 to finish the first round tied for 13th place. Freshman Diane Kwon posted a 77 as the final scoring player for the Bears. Junior Roseanne Niven was the Bears' fifth with an 81.
Halbig had three birdies on the back-nine, including a birdie on the par-3 17th, to earn her two-under. Goodman birdied the par-4 13th hole and the par-5 16th to post a 74. Yocum had a pair of birdies on the two par-5's on the back nine, the 12th and 16th holes, to post a three-under. Yocum, who withdrew from the Spartan Invivational and hasn't played a complete tournament since late February, showed little rust in her game, getting right back into form posting her 74.
The Bears will once again be teeing off in the first groups on Saturday. See the attached sheet for complete pairings and tee times.
The teams will play 18 holes on Saturday, with the 54-hole tournament wrapping up Sunday afternoon. The Bears are trying to earn a berth in the NCAA Regionals. Selections for the regionals will be announced Monday afternoon, April 27.
