No. 15 Cal Bashes Oregon State 11-2
April 24, 2009
The No. 15 California Golden Bears (30-15, 6-7 Pac-10) earned an 11-2 victory in five innings over the Oregon State Beavers (24-23, 3-10 Pac-10) Friday afternoon in Berkeley. Bernice Masaniai hit two home runs for the Bears.
After just one base runner, a lead off single by the Beavers to start the game, in the first inning and a half, the quiet nature of the game suddenly changed in the bottom of the second. Junior catcher Bernice Masaniai homered over the left field wall, putting the Bears up 1-0 three pitches into the inning. After freshman right fielder Elia Reid reached on an error, she promptly stole second base. Junior second baseman Shannon Thomas singled to center to put runners at the corners. A sacrifice advanced Thomas to second, giving the Bears a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. Junior third baseman Verna Sevilla hit a ball towards third base, with the Beavers electing to try to get the speedy Elia Reid at the plate instead of taking out Sevilla. Reid slid around the tag and scored, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead. Another fielders' choice for the Beavers ended badly with the short stop bobbling the ball before tossing to second, allowing another Cal run to score with still just one out. Sophomore first baseman Valerie Arioto took the first pitch she saw in her at bat and smashed it deep over the center field wall to score three more runs. After a pitching change, the offense kept going for the Bears with freshman left fielder Jamia Reid drawing a walk, then stole second, designated player, senior Gina Leomiti singled to drive in Reid from second, giving the Bears a seven-run second inning. The Bears were finally retired on a double play after sending 10 batters to the plate.
The Bears extended the lead to 8-0 in the third inning. Elia Reid singled up the middle to start off the inning, coming around to score four batters later on a fielders choice. The Bears left the bases loaded in the third, with the Beavers escaping worse damage by inducing a pop up to second to get back to their dugout.
Oregon State's two runs were scored on a single swing of the bat by a two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole in the top of the fourth inning.
The Bears put themselves back in position to shorten the game to five innings in the bottom of the fourth. Masaniai hit her second solo home run of the game, this one going just inside the left field foul pole for a 9-2 Cal lead. A pair of bear singles put two runners on with two outs for Sevilla, who smashed a ball to left field to drive in two runs to give the Bears an 11-2 lead.
Bears' junior pitcher Marissa Drewrey earned her 17th victory of the season, pitching the five-inning complete game. Drewrey was ahead of every batter, striking out seven batters in the shortened game. She allowed five hits but walked none in the victory.
The Bears will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host the Oregon Ducks at Levine-Fricke Field.
