No. 3 USC Gunning For Pac-10 Title

The No. 3 USC men's golf team, featuring four All-Americans that include current No. 1 NCAA player Matt Giles and two-time All-American and 2007 NCAA individual champion Jamie Lovemark, begins the quest for its 19th conference crown at the 50th annual Pac-10 Championships Monday through Wednesday (April 27-29) at the Seattle G.C.
Play at the Par-72, 6,806-yard course begins with a 36-hole first day. First-round action starts at 7:30 a.m. and second-round tee times begin at 12:30 p.m. The third and fourth rounds start at 8 a.m. both days. In the Pac-10 Championships, six golfers play each round with five counting toward the daily team score.

Within the USC-UCLA Lexus Gauntlet competition, the season-long battle between Trojans and Bruins in all sports, points for men's golf are awarded to the highest finisher between the crosstown rivals at the Pac-10 Championships. Five points are up for grabs. The winning school needs 57.5 points to clinch. USC currently leads 45-40.
USC'S HISTORY AT THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Trojans have won the Pac-10 title a conference best 18 times, including a dominating 36-stroke win in 2007. USC came close to make it 19 times in 2008 with back-to-back wins (like they did in 2001 and 2002), but fell in a playoff to ASU last year ... Troy claimed the crown 15 times between 1962 and 1986 ... USC boasts 20 individual champions, including Jamie Lovemark in 2007, which ended a drought that dated back to Sam Randolph's tie for first in 1983 ... USC has also earned seven Pac-10 Golfer of the Year honors, including Lovemark's 2007 distinction and Kevin Stadler's in 2002.
Junior Jamie Lovemark
Lovemark is a two-time All-American first teamer who won the 2007 NCAA individual championship and a slew of awards including 2007 Player of the Year. He is coming off a 2008 sophomore season in which he finished in the top 16 in all but one tournament. He tied for team high with seven top 10 finishes (all in the top 8) ... Lovemark began 2009 in strong fashion, finishing in the top 10 in his first four events. That included a second-place finish in Troy's most recent event at the UH Hilo Invitational. He also tied for seventh at the 2008 CordeValle Collegiate and tied for 10th in the 2008 Fall Preview and the 2008 UCF Collegiate Invitational ... But a broken pinky finger suffered at the start of the spring season cost him USC's first two spring events. Now fully healed, he is regaining his form as the postseason approaches ... He five rounds in the 60s this season and is third on the team in stroke average (72.81) ... He was on the 2009 The Ben Hogan Award watch list. He was a finalist for the award in 2008 and a semifinalist for it in 2007.
Sophomore Matt Giles
Giles, a 2008 All-American honorable mention selection, had two top 11 finishes as a freshman and six in the top 27 ... He has dominated as a sophomore, vaulting to the No. 1 ranking among NCAA golfers thanks to six top 7 finishes and eight in the top 11. He was top 7 in the first five the events this year. He was fourth at the 2008 UCF Collegiate Invitational (1-under 215) and the 2009 USC Collegiate Invitational (6-under 207), tied for fourth at the 2008 CordeValle Collegiate (2-under 214) and the U.S. Intercollegiate (8-under 202) and tied for seventh at the 2009 UH Hilo Invitational ... At the 2008 Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic (a non-team event), Giles tied for fourth ... USC's leader in stroke average (71.07) and rounds in the 60s (nine), he is a semifinalist for the 2009 The Ben Hogan Award.
Senior Tom Glissmeyer
Glissmeyer, a 2008 All-American honorable mention pick, posted six top 16 finishes as a 2008 junior and posted three consecutive top six finishes late in the year, including tying for sixth at both the Pac-10 and NCAA Regional Championships ... Glissmeyer has three top 10 finishes this year and five top 20, including a tie for first at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, when he won with a 1-under 213 (69-70-73). He had back-to-back top 10 finishes with a tie for seventh in the 2009 UH Hilo Invitational and a third at the 2008 CordeValle Collegiate. He has six rounds in the 60s this season.
Sophomore Tim Sluiter
Sluiter, a 2008 All-American honorable mention pick, had seven top 14 finishes and four in the top 10 as a 2008 freshman, including a tie for ninth at the 2008 NCAA Championships (where he was USC's top finisher). He also won the individual title at the 2008 USC Collegiate Invitational ... As a sophomore, Sluiter has five top 10 finishes, including a tie for first at the 2008 CordeValle Collegiate with a 4-under 212 (70-70-72). He tied for fourth at the U.S. Intercollegiate with an 8-under 202 (69-67-66), was seventh at the 2009 USC Collegiate (which included a final-round 65), tied for seventh at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate and tied for 10th at the 2008 Fall Preview. He also competed in the 2008 Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic (a non-team event) ... He is second on the team in stroke average (72.73) and has five rounds in the 60s.
Sophomore Bo DeHuff
DeHuff played in three events as a 2008 redshirt freshman, tying for 50th twice for season-best finishes. Among his five events in 2009, he's tied for 14th at the Bill Cullum Invitational, tied for 51st at the USC Collegiate Invitational and tied for 56th at the UH Hilo Invitational, which included a final-round 67.
Senior Ryan Linton
Linton, who played in two events as a junior, has already exceeded that total, playing among USC's starters in six events this year. His best finish last year was a tie for 20th at the USC Collegiate Invitational, something he already bettered with a 14th finish at the 2009 UH Hilo Invitational at 1-over 217 (76-69-72). He also tied for 30th at the 2009 USC Collegiate Invitational and tied for 33rd at the 2008 CordeValle Collegiate.
Freshman Steve Lim
Lim has come on strong as a freshman, becoming a regular member of USC's starting five. In six outings with the Trojans, he has three top 20 finishes, highlighted by his tie for eighth at the 2009 USC Collegiate Invitational (when he was playing as an individual). He finished the event at 1-under 212 (71-71-70). He also tied for 18th at the U.S. Intercollegiate with a 2-under 208 (70-70-68) and tied for eighth at the Bill Cullum Invitational at 4-under 212 (69-70-73) and tied for 45th at the CordeValle Collegiate ... He has two rounds in the 60s.
Senior Gavin Reid
Reid has played in three events this season, tying for 30th at the Bill Cullum Invitational, tying for 46th at the USC Collegiate Invitational and taking 77th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
Sophomore Daniel Park
Park has played in two events this season, tying for 41st at the Bill Cullum Invitational and tying for 57th at the USC Collegiate Invitational.
2008 Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview
Tim Sluiter fired a 4-under 67 and finished tied for 10th with junior teammate Jamie Lovemark as the No. 2 USC men's golf team finished fourth at the highly competitive 2008 Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview at the Inverness C.C. in Toledo, Ohio, on Sept. 30.USC finished with a combined 15-over 867 (286-291-290). Oklahoma State (843) took first and was followed by Tennessee (859), Georgia (861), USC and Alabama (868).Sluiter (76-70-67) and Lovemark (66-76-71) tied for 10th at even 213. Sluiter's 67 featured four birdies without a bogey as he tied his low round as a Trojan. He did it twice as a freshman last season. Lovemark also had four birdies on the day. USC extended its streak of finishing in the top four to 12 consecutive tournaments.
2008 Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview
Matt Giles finished fourth and Jamie Lovemark tied for 10th to lead the No. 2 USC men's golf team on the final day of the 2008 Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 26-28) at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Fla. USC finished fifth at 30-over 894 (290-289-315). Giles, in his first event of the season, posted his second-best finish as a Trojan, finishing fourth at 1-under 215 (72-69-74). He had three birdies on the day, finishing as the top Trojan during a round marred by inclement weather. Lovemark tied for 10th at 2-over 218 (75-68-75). He posted his second eagle in as many days on the par 5 7th hole and also birdied the 10 hole.
2008 CordeValle Collegiate
USC completed a wire-to-wire victory in dominating fashion, placing four players in the top seven spots and winning the UCLA-hosted 2008 CordeValle Collegiate by a whopping 26 strokes (Nov. 3-5) at the CordeValle C.C. in San Martin, Calif.
In a tournament in which six players play and five are counted, the Trojans finished at even 1080 (357-362-361), 26 strokes ahead of second-place Stanford (1106). Tim Sluiter won his second tournament as a Trojan, tying for first at 4-under 212 (70-70-72). He tied with Washington's Nick Taylor. Tom Glissmeyer took third at 3-under 213 (74-71-68), Matt Giles tied for fourth at 2-under 214 (69-72-73) and Jamie Lovemark tied for seventh at 1-over 217 (70-72-75).
2009 UH Hilo Invitational
Jamie Lovemark, Tom Glissmeyer and Matt Giles were all under par to lead a strong final-round team effort to lift the USC men's golf team to victory at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate (Feb. 4-6) at the Waikoloa C.C. in Waikoloa, Hawaii. USC finished first at 13-under 851 (285-284-282), extending its lead over Washington to 11 strokes by day's end as the Huskies finished second at 862. The victory was USC's second in a row. Lovemark came close to claiming his first collegiate victory since winning the 2007 NCAA individual title. Instead, he finished alone in second at 5-under 211 (69-73-69), a stroke out of first. Giles (72-70-71) and Glissmeyer (72-72-70) tied for seventh at 3-under 213.
2009 USC Collegiate Invitational
Sophomores Matt Giles and Tim Sluiter posted top 10 finishes to lead the USC men's golf team as it finished fourth at the Trojan-hosted 2009 USC Collegiate at the North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif., (Feb. 23-24). Stanford won the event at 13-under 839 (284-276-279) while BYU took second at 3-under 849 (275-287-287). Cal was third at 6-over 858 (285-286-287) and USC moved from eighth to fourth on the final day, finishing at 7-over 859 (292-292-275). The Trojans played without two-time All-American junior Jamie Lovemark for the first time. Lovemark missed the event while recovering from a broken finger. Giles, 1-under after 36 holes, fired a 5-under 66 to take fourth. Sluiter used a strong final round to finish seventh at 2-under 211 (71-75-65). The event's defending individual champion carded six birdies, including three in a row on 7, 8 and 9, and eagled the par 5 12th hole. USC freshman Steve Lim, playing as an individual, turned in Troy's third-best 54-hole score with a 1-under 212 (71-71-70), his best effort as a Trojan. He finished tied for eighth after a final round that included four birdies.
2009 Southern Highlands Collegiate
Sophomore Matt Giles posted his sixth top 7 finish in as many events this season, tying for second-place to lead the No. 2 USC men's golf team in the final round of the 2009 Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship on Sunday (March 15) at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas, Nev. USC, still playing without injured two-time All-American Jamie Lovemark (broken finger), moved from a tie for eighth into fifth at 15-over 879 (295-294-290) after registering the fourth-best final round. Giles tied for second at 6-under 210 (67-71-72), four back of first place. It was his highest finish this season and fifth in the top 4. Three-over after seven holes, Giles used an eagle on 9 and three birdies to help him get back to par for the rest of the round. Senior Tom Glissmeyer tied for 11th at 2-over 218 (76-69-73), his third top 11 finish in five events. He finished with 17 birdies in 54 holes.
2009 Morris Williams Intercollegiate
Senior Tom Glissmeyer earned his first medalist honors as a Trojan, tying for first place to lead USC men's golf team to second place at the 2009 Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas G.C. in Austin, Texas, on Monday (March 30). USC, which saw the return of two-time All-American junior Jamie Lovemark (broken finger), finished third at 39-over 891 (291-293-307). Oklahoma State (863) took first. Glissmeyer, whose best finish this year was third and his best finish as a Trojan was a tie for second last season, carded a final round 2-over to finish at 1-under 212 (69-70-73). Sophomore Tim Sluiter tied for seventh at 8-over 221 (72-74-75). He had four birdies on the day and was par over the final 16 holes after opening at 4-over through the first two holes.
2009 U.S. Collegiate Championship
Sophomores Matt Giles and Tim Sluiter tied for 11th and 17th, respectively, leading USC during a final round played in snow flurries at the 2009 U.S. Collegiate Championship at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga., on Tuesday (April 7). The Trojans finished ninth at 24-over 888 (285-308-295), 12 back of winner Clemson (876). Giles finished at 4-over 220 (67-77-76) with Sluiter a shot back at 5-over 221 (72-75-74). Both players knocked in three birdies on the day.
2009 U.S. Intercollegiate
Sophomores Matt Giles and Tim Sluiter tied for fourth and led the No. 3 USC men's golf team to a second-place finish at the 2009 U.S. Intercollegiate on Sunday (April 19) at Stanford (Calif.) G.C. USC began and finished the day in second. Troy combined for the second-lowest round of the day and finished the 54-hole event at 21-under 819 (277-268-274). The Trojans, who have finished outside the top five only once this year, couldn't overcome a blazing Washington team that won with a 36-under 804. Giles, who carded his eighth and ninth rounds in the 60s on Saturday, finished at 8-under 202 (68-63-71) after a 1-over final round. The tie for fourth was his sixth top 7 finish of the season and fifth in the top 4. Sluiter, who entered the event with two rounds in the 60s this season, carded three this weekend to finish at 8-under 202 (69-67-66). His final round included six birdies, including four on a 3-under back 9.
