Pac-10 Championships: Two Cardinal Advance To Singles Semifinals, On Pair To Doubles Semis

OJAI, Calif. - No. 48 freshman Bradley Klahn and No. 20 sophomore Alex Clayton continued their winning ways today at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., as each player was successful in his quarterfinals match and advanced to tomorrow semifinals of the Pac-10 singles championship bracket. Klahn also advanced to the semifinals of the doubles bracket.
Klahn beat UCLA's No. 73 Matt Brooklyn 7-6, 6-4 and will face seventh-ranked Robert Farah of USC tomorrow at 11 a.m, while Clayton dispatched Arizona's Andres Carrasco 6-1, 6-1 and will play the Trojans' No. 67 Steven Johnson at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.
In quarterfinal action of the invitational singles bracket, sophomore Greg Hirshman took down his opponent Duncan MacDonald-Korth (Oregon) 6-2, 6-2 and will play UCLA's Eugen Brazdil in the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. Senior Jeff Zeller fell to USC's Daniel Nguyen 6-1, 6-4, ending his campaign in the tournament.
In championship doubles play, two Cardinal pairs advanced to the quarterfinals, but only one will play in tomorrow's semifinals. The No. 35 pair of junior Richard Wire and senior Blake Muller beat Arizona's Carrasco and Ravid Hazi 8-3, but fell in the quarterfinals to USC's Abdullah Magdas and Nguyen 9-8(4). Klahn and fellow classmate Ryan Thacher, ranked No. 45 in the country, bested UCLA's Holden Seguso and Brooklyn 8-5 before pulling off of the day's biggest upsets, defeating the nation's No. 2 pair of Farah and Johnson (USC), 8-6. Klahn and Thacher will play Washington's Derek Drabble and Martin Kildahl in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. Clayton and teammate Ted Kelly fell to Oregon's Alexander Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco 8-5 in the Round of 16.
In the invitational doubles bracket, Hirshman and Zeller combined for the 8-4 win in the quarterfinals over California's Tommie Murphy and Evan Rose and will play USC's Daniel Gliner and Jason McNaughton in the semifinals at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
