Erickson Blanks Oregon, 2-0
April 25, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. - Brendan Gardner-Young's two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth broke a scoreless tie as Husky senior Jason Erickson out-dueled Oregon's Erik Stavert, throwing a complete-game shutout as Washington beat Oregon, 2-0, in a Pac-10 game Saturday at PK Park.
Erickson, a right-hander from White River High, threw the first complete game of the season by a Husky for the win, improving to 2-4. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out seven.
The game went to the ninth with a 0-0 score. The UW loaded the bases on a double from Julien Pollard, a walk and an error. After Stavert got a strikeout for the second out, his 1-2 pitch to Gardner-Young was lined up the middle to drive in two runs.
Stavert, a junior righty, also went the distance, allowing the two runs (both unearned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out 10, falling to 4-3 on the season.
The Huskies improved to 17-22 overall and 6-8 in the Pac-10 with their third straight win while the Ducks fell to 13-27 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
The two starting pitchers matched each other through the first six innings. Neither team managed to mount much of an offense threat. The Huskies had two aboard in the first, but with two outs, they couldn't score.
In the seventh, thanks to a single and a walk, the Huskies had a runner in scoring position with less than two outs for the first time all day by either team, but a double-play groundout ended that inning.
The Ducks got a leadoff runner aboard for the first time all day in the seventh when Danny Pulfer singled. But, after a bunt and a groundout moved him to third, a flyout left him stranded with the game still scoreless.
The series wraps up with another 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. The game will air live both on KKNW AM-1150 and Comcast SportsNet television.
