More Records Set at Brutus Hamilton Invitational
April 25, 2009
More records were broken in the second day of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Saturday at Edwards Stadium. Highlighting the day's action for Cal was sophomore Michael Coe breaking the school record in the mile and setting the fastest collegiate, U.S. and third-fastest time in the world this season. Junior Kimyon Broom also set the new school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Former Cal student-athlete Grace Upshaw set the world-leading mark and Edwards Stadium record in the long jump (22-3.75, 6.80m).
'This was a multi-faceted extravaganza,' said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. 'Last night was a home run with all of the records and the great marks. I didn't know if we would be able to surpass that, but today was spectacular. Obviously, the mile was the exclamaton point. It was great to see a lot of fans here and we had 300 track and field alumni here. It was a spectacular homecoming.'
Coe's time in the mile was 3:56.18, which marks the third consecutive season that there has been a sub-four-minute mile at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Coe surpassed David Torrence's record time of 3:58.62 for the school record. Torrence took second in the race at 3:57.04. The previous NCAA-best time was 4:01.38 and the previous best U.S. time was 3:58.90.
'It was tooth and nail there between Michael and David,' Sandoval said. 'It was too bad that one of them had to lose, but at least they both PRed. It was windy, so it was a great finish despite the wind factor.'
Broom's time of 13.08 in the 100-meter hurdles surpassed her previous school record-setting time of 13.17, which she set in the prelims at the Pac-10 Championships last year.
'We were thinking about redshirting Kimyon this season, but she has come on so fast, this does not surprise me. She is on fire right now.'
Kellan Patterson clocked a lifetime-best 10.49 in the 100, coming in second overall. That time also ties Patterson for 10th on the all-time school list with Jerrod Cherry. Freshman Sebastian Sam notched a personal-best time of 1:49.44 in the 800. In the women's triple jump, senior Artensia Young notched a new personal best of 41-07.25 (12.68m), which ranks fifth all-time in school history.
The Bears took the top two spots in the women's pole vault. Sophomore Allison Stokke tied her collegiate best mark at 13-5.75 (4.11m), which also ranks second in school history. Senior Katie Morgan, the current school record holder, took second at 13-1.50 (4.00m). In the men's pole vault, junior Ryan Shuler won the event with a mark of 17-00.75 (5.20m).
For the fourth time this season, sophomore Cherrelle Garrett won the 100, clocking an 11.40, a new personal best. At the Big Meet last week, Garrett tallied a wind-aided 11.34. Her 11.40 100-meter time ranks second in school history.
The Cal men's 4x100-meter relay recorded its best time of the season at 40.63, taking first place. The women's 4x100 relay also took top honors at 44.91, the third-best time of the season. The men's 4x400 relay also won with a time of 3:12.54.
Next weekend, Cal heads back to Stanford for the Payton Jordan Cardinal Qualifier on Saturday, May 2..
