'Cats Finish Up in San Diego and Tempe
April 26, 2009
Nine athletes posted regional qualifying marks as the UA track and field team split up to take part in both the Triton Invitational in San Diego and the Sun Devil Invite in Tempe. The squad sent most of their throwers to San Diego for the annual meet while many of the runners and other field athletes headed north to compete on Arizona State's turf.
Senior Nick Mossberg highlighted the day for the Wildcats, setting an outdoor person best in the pole vault. Mossberg dominated the competition on his way to a best clearance of 5.30m (17-4 1/2). Barring results from other meets taking place over the weekend, that mark will boost Mossberg up into the top-10 national in the event this season.
Two Wildcats earned the first regional qualifications of their careers in junior throwers Kendra Walworth and Kelsey Jessup.
Walworth set a personal record for herself Saturday in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.26m (178-00). The mark was good for a NCAA West Regional Qualification, the first of Walworth's career.
Jessup had an impressive personal best in the women's shot put with a best throw of 14.31m (46-11 1/2). The mark makes Jessup the fourth and final of the UA women's shot putters to earn a regional qualification. Jessup and Walworth earned the seventh and eighth regional qualifications for UA throwers.
Gabriella Duclos continued to dominate the women's pole vault, winning yet another competition Satruday with her best mark of 4.10m (13-5 1/4).
In San Diego, senior Megan Howard had regional marks in the discus and shot put events and fellow senior Nicole Lloyd also had two regional marks in the discus and shot put. Zack Lloyd, the team's premier shot putter, won the men's shot put event with a mark of 18.90m (62-0 1/4) and also qualified in the discus events.
The Wildcats will head back up to Tempe again next weekend to take part in the annual Arizona-ASU-NAU Double Dual meet as both the men and the women will compete for homestate bragging rights.
