Harwell, Stanton Earn Coach K Spirit Award for 2009
April 28, 2009
Seniors, Madeleine Stanton (swimming) and Brigham Harwell (football) were selected as the 2009 Coach K Spirit Award winners at the recently conducted spring Wooden Academy. The award was created in honor of longtime coach and administrator Ed Kezirian, who demonstrates tremendous character, passion and commitment to representing UCLA Athletics.
Members of the Bruin Athletic Council, which is made up of members from each of UCLA's 22 athletic teams, nominated one senior from their respective teams in order to determine this year's winners. The criteria for the award states that nominees must demonstrate enthusiasm, leadership, and exemplify the qualities of a True Bruin...Integrity, Excellence, Accountability and Respect. Stanton and Harwell have been positive role models and outstanding ambassadors of UCLA Athletics. Coach K was in attendence to congratulate this year's award winners. Rhonda Watkins (track & field) and Lorenzo Mata (men's basketball) received last year's awards.
The Spring Wooden Academy featured former Bruins, Paul Nihipali (men's volleyball, 1993-1997) and Beth (Boehme) Orozco (swimming, 1999-2003). The theme of this quarter's Wooden Academy was Confidence. Student-athletes gathered in Pauley Pavilion to listen to Paul and Beth share some of their favorite Bruin memories, and learn how confidence has played an important role in their athletic and professional success. The goal of the Wooden Academy is to educate and develop Bruin student-athletes in their pursuit to become successful leaders in their sport and in preparing for life after sports. The Wooden Academy uses Bruin alums to teach practical leadership lessons using the values of Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success.
