April 28, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Sun Devil Volleyball program wrapped the first Arizona Collegiate Sand Volleyball Tournament last weekend at Victory Lanes which saw the Sun Devils coming out to shine with sophomore duo of Sofie Schlagintweit and Camri Zweisler taking second overall in the tournament and Marina Mercer and Ashley Kelty taking fifth overall.
The event proved to be a success, one which Head Coach Jason Watson hopes to build on in the future, stating, 'I'm thankful for everyone who helped put this event together and for the support we received from the schools in attendance. The tournament was a wonderful way to complete a successful spring season and I'm excited about the potential of sand volleyball at Arizona State University and the play of our athletes. Sofie and Camri exceeded their seeding and played well throughout the tournament.'
On the tournament, sophomore Sofie Schlagintweit said, 'It was a great experience overall to get out on the beach, especially with a fun, laid back atmosphere. Camri played great throughout and we just came out to play, even with adjustment to sand and Camri being from Kansas and myself from Canada, we were able to really compete this weekend and had fun as well.'
Fellow Sun Devil sophomore Camri Zweisler added that, 'For it being our first real experience playing sand volleyball, I think our coaches really prepared us well, which in turn helped us to advance as far as we did. Being from Kansas, I had never played sand volleyball, so really the credit goes to them.'
The tournament wraps the 2009 spring season, where now the Sun Devils will set sights on their 2009 season coming up this fall. For more information on the outcome of the tournament, please head to: http://www.sundevilvolleyball.com/collegiate-sand-volleyball.
