April 29, 2009
DAVIS, Calif. -
The California Golden Bears (33-15, 8-7 Pac-10) won their final regular-season non-conference game of the year, earning a 3-1 road victory at UC Davis Wednesday afternoon.
The UC Davis Aggies (21-27) committed three errors in the second inning, giving Cal its first scoring opportunity. The Bears plated a run on an RBI single by Vernae Sevilla with another crossing the plate on a fielders choice to give Cal a 2-0 lead.
Davis got a run back in the bottom of the first, scoring an unearned run of their own after getting a runner aboard on a pass ball after a strikeout. The runner came around to score on an error by the Bears' infield.
Cal got the run back in the fifth inning on a solo home run to deep left field by Bernice Masaniai. The home run, the 49th of the season for the team, tied the school record for most home runs in a season. The mark was set in the 2007 season.
Marissa Drewrey, coming into the game in the fourth inning, earned her 19th victory of the season, pitching four shut out innings, allowing two hits. Valerie Arioto, pitching the first three innings, allowed one unearned run on just one hit.
A more complete recap will be posted later this evening.
