No. 16 Men's Crew Heads To Opening Day Regatta
April 29, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. -
The Oregon State men's rowing team will race in their final regatta before the Pac-10 Championships as the Beavers travel to Seattle to take on Pacific Northwest rival Washington and the Brazilian National team in the Windermere Cup on Montlake Cut May 2.
'We are thrilled to be invited to the Windermere Cup this year,' said head coach Steve Todd. 'Our guys have raced on the Montlake Cut many times, but to be in the main event at one of the biggest rowing races in America is special.'
The Beavers' No. 16-ranked Varsity 8+ crew has been invited to compete in the invitational portion of the Opening Day Regatta and will face off against the No. 2-ranked V8+ crew from Washington, which is coming off of a victory over then-No. 1 California. Oregon State will also have a unique opportunity to compete against international competition as the Beavers take on an 8+ crew from the Brazilian Rowing Federation. The Men's Windermere Cup is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
'After their win last week over Cal, Washington moved up to No. 2 in the rankings, and that makes them a challenge,' said Todd. 'But our guys have been racing the fastest boats in the country all year. We stepped up and really battled Stanford two weeks ago and I expect the team to do the same this week.'
In addition to the varsity crew, Oregon State will bring a Freshman 8+ to compete against Washington in a dual race scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. A Junior Varsity 4+ and a Freshman 4+ will get the day of racing started for the Beavers when they begin at 10:35 a.m.
Todd is happy with the improvement he has seen over the past two weeks and is optimistic that the Beavers will continue to improve. 'The guys have had two weeks since our last race and we've continued to work on the little adjustments that are needed to reach peak speed in May and June.'
