USC Takes 9-3 Win At No. 6 Cal State Fullerton

April 29, 2009

FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman first baseman Ricky Oropesa went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI Wednesday as the USC Trojans beat the No. 6 Cal State Fullerton Titans, 9-3, in a non conference game at Goodwin Field. Oropesa hit two homers in a game for the second time in nine days.

Anthony Vasquez (3-4) threw six innings for USC (22-20), allowing three runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts, as well as going 2-for-5 at the plate.

Joey Siddons and Gary Brown had three hits each for Cal State Fullerton (29-12) while starter Kyle Witten (4-3) took the loss after giving up five runs in two innings.

Mike O'Neill hit a high chopper in the first for an infield single, followed by a single by right fielder Alex Sherrod. Grant Green hit a long fly ball to right that moved the runners before Oropesa unleashed his ninth home run of the season with a three-run shot to right center.

Christian Colon led off the bottom half of the first with a double to the gap in left center. Siddons moved Colon to third on a groundout to the right side and Brown hit another ground ball to second to score Colon for the 3-1 USC lead.

Green was hit by a Witten pitch in the third and Oropesa made him pay by hitting his second homer with the two-run shot to left center for the 5-1 advantage. Siddons doubled home Colon in the third as the Titans cut the deficit to three.

With runners at second and third in the fourth, Green hit a tough ground ball to short. Colon's throw was wide of the bag as two runs scored for USC, making it 7-2. Green was credited with the RBI single and Colon charged on the throwing error.

Fullerton loaded the bases in the fifth off Vasquez, but Green took Khris Davis' ground ball and turned it into a 6-3 double play to get out of the inning. The Titans would do it again in the sixth with the bases loaded, but Tony Harkey hit a one-hopper right back to the mound as USC used the 1-2-3 double play to get out of another jam.

USC travels to Seattle this weekend for a Pac-10 Conference series at Washington this weekend, Friday-Sunday (May 1-3). Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on
