No. 13 USC Looks to Carry Momentum into Matchup with Cross-town Rival UCLA
April 30, 2009
No. 13 USC will look to ride the momentum they built last weekend at the Charles River Challenge into this Saturday's (May 2) match up with the No. 19 UCLA Bruins at their home in Marina del Rey. The Women of Troy are coming off a solid weekend against top rowing talent in Boston, where they beat Harvard, Boston University, Tennessee and came up less than a second short against No. 11 ranked Virginia.
The dual will consist of races of the varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the varsity four and the novice eight. Three (3) points will be awarded to the varsity eight winner, two (2) to the JV eight winner and one (1) point apiece to the winners of the varsity four and novice eight race for a total of seven possible points.
The Women of Troy will look to pick up coveted USC-UCLA Lexus Gauntlet points for the season long battle between UCLA and USC at this dual meet.
USC and UCLA began racing annually in 2002, the year that UCLA resurrected its rowing program and the Women of Troy winning all seven dual meetings. Including the unofficial 2nd varsity four race, the Trojans have now won 18 of the 28 individual head to head races in the six-year annual dual and also own a 7-0 record overall against the Bruins since the inception of the Lexus Gauntlet. The Trojan varsity eight have never lost a dual race to UCLA and the JV eight holds a 5-2 record. USC leads in varsity four races with a 4-3 record. The novice eight boat was beaten by UCLA in 2008, but in 2006 the Women of Troy got the victory. Prior to that victory, the Bruins had won the three previous novice boat meetings, with no novice race taking place in 2004.
Exact times for the races will be posted as soon as they are known. Below are the lineups for the boats and directions to UCLA's boathouse in Marina del Rey.
