TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team scored an impressive sweep of its intrastate rivals on Saturday night while also collecting 23 total event victories and recording 27 regional qualifiers in the annual Double Dual that was held inside Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. The Sun Devils, in their final tune-up meet before the championship season gets underway, recorded 46 marks that placed them among the Top 3 in an event while also tallying three marks that rank among the Top 10 in program history.

In the team standings, the Sun Devil women defeated the Wildcats, 107-93, while also downing the Lumberjacks, 116-68. The men also scored wins over both rivals, handing UA a 109-89 defeat while knocking off NAU, 134-51. The Wildcats defeated the Lumberjacks in the other duals that were held with the men winning, 118-66, and the women, 127-64.

The throws played a vital part in the team’s success on the day as the men’s and women’s shot put, discus, hammer and javelin were all won by Sun Devils with Sarah Stevens collecting three of the wins on her own. Stevens won the hammer (63.34m), the discus (55.31m) and the shot put (17.13m) to lead the way while Lissa Regets captured the javelin with a toss of 43.16m. Ryan Whiting added wins in the men’s shot put (20.41m) and the discus (60.32m) while Jason Lewis was victorious in the hammer (63.40m) and Marc Peck capturing the javelin with a toss of 63.40m. Peck’s toss was his first that qualified him for the NCAA regional meet later this season.

Back on the track, the Sun Devil sprinters put on an impressive display as well by winning seven women’s and four men’s events with sweeps in both relays, as well as the 100m and 200m dashes. For the women, Dominique’ Maloy took the gold in the 100m (11.66) while Charonda Williams won the 200m (23.37) before each helped the 4x100m relay to a winning time of 44.02. Jasmine Chaney captured both hurdle events, winning the 100m hurdles in 13.77 and the 400m hurdles in 59.10. In that same race, freshman Kayla Sanchez took second in 59.80 to become the 10th woman in ASU history to break 60 seconds while also qualifying regionally in the event for the first time. She also helped the 4x400m relay to victory to close out the Dual.

On the men’s side, true freshman Allante Battle won the 100m (10.58) and the 200m (21.21) events while the 4x100m relay ran 40.31 and the 4x400m relay won in 3:10.25. The remaining men’s wins came with Nectaly Barbosa taking the 800m run in 1:50.03 and the David Mehlhorn winning the steeplechase in 9:04.34. The final three victories for the women came from Haley Paul taking the 5,000m run in 17:04.57, Williams winning the long jump at 5.99m (just one centimeter from qualifying for the regional meet) and Marjorie Rima taking the triple jump (11.08m).

Two other women also added their names to the all-time Top 10 list in ASU history to join Sanchez’ run. In the pole vault, senior Stacy Orosz cleared a personal-best 3.70m to move into a tie for sixth on the all-time list and become just the sixth woman to clear 12 feet in competition. In the hammer, freshman Cj Navarro improved her No. 10 throw to 49.62m, rewriting that mark for the third time this season.

All told, the Sun Devil women won 14 events, placed second five times and took third twice while collecting 13 total regional qualifying marks. On the men’s side, the Sun Devils won nine events and placed second and third eight times each while recording 14 regional qualifying marks.

Next up for the Sun Devils will be the 2009 Pac-10 Conference Championships in Eugene, Ore. The heptathlon and decathlon will be held next weekend with the remaining events taking place the following weekend.
