Washington Shuts Out USC, 3-0
May 2, 2009
SEATTLE - Jason Erickson struck out a career-high nine batters Saturday as the Washington Huskies shut out the USC Trojans, 3-0, at Husky Ballpark. Erickson went eight innings and allowed six hits while not allowing a walk as the Huskies have taken the first two games of the Pac-10 Conference series.
USC (22-22, 10-10 Pac-10) stranded eight runners as the Trojans were unable to solve Erickson. The Trojans had runners at first and second with no outs in the ninth, but Geoff Brown and Brian Pearl struck out three straight batters to secure the victory for Washington (20-23, 9-8 Pac-10).
Jake Rife went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI for the Huskies.
Brendan Gardner-Young led off the bottom of the first with a walk. He moved to second when Washington tried a hit-and-run play as Caleb Brown grounded out to third and Rife put the Huskies ahead with an RBI double down the third base line.
Erickson retired the last 11 batters he faced as USC had chances in the second and fifth innings. Washington added two insurance runs in the eighth when Rife tripled home Caleb Brown from second, later scoring on Kyle Conley's RBI single.
USC concludes its series with Washington tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
