Scott Lifts UW Past USC, 3-2, In 10 Innings
May 3, 2009
SEATTLE - Troy Scott belted an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning two break a 2-2 tie as the Washington baseball team completed a sweep of USC with a 3-2 win Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Scott, who also hit a solo homer earlier in the game, came up with runners at first and second with no outs before lining the winning hit into the gap in right-center. Jake Rife led off the 10th with a leadoff single and was safe at second when, on a groundball from Kyle Conley, shortstop Grant Green's toss to second baseman Joe DePinto was dropped for an error.
Washington, which has now won six straight in league play, improved to 21-23 overall and 10-8 in the Pac-10 while the Trojans fell to 22-23 and 10-11.
UW closer Brian Pearl, who loaded the bases but struck out Hector Rabago to end the threat in the 10th, picked up the win, improving to 1-3. USC's Chad Smith (3-3), who came on in the eighth, suffered the loss.
Washington grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore second baseman Pierce Rankin hit a solo homer to left, his sixth of the season.
That lead stood up until the Trojans, who were shut out on Saturday, finally broke through in the sixth. After a walk and a double to open the inning, Ricky Oropesa lined a double off the left-field fence, scoring both runners to put the Trojans on top, 2-1.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Scott led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, his eighth of the year, to tie the score at 2-2.
Both starting pitchers performed well, but neither figured in the decision. USC's Robert Stock gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings. He walked five and struck out 10. Husky freshman Andrew Kittredge also worked seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
The Huskies won't take the field again until next Friday when Oregon State comes to Seattle for a three-game series. The opener, Friday at 6:30 p.m., will be played at Safeco Field while the second and third games will take place at Husky Ballpark. All three will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
