EUGENE, Ore. - Right-hander Charles Brewer (3-4) allowed one run and five hits in six innings as the UCLA baseball team defeated Oregon, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon to earn a Pac-10 series victory at PK Park. The Bruins (22-22, 13-8 Pac-10) secured their sixth Pac-10 series win of the season in eight attempts.
Brewer notched his second victory in as many Pac-10 starts, notching two strikeouts and issuing one walk. The right-hander's effort helped UCLA notch its 12th win in its last 17 games. UCLA's bullpen combined for three shutout innings, as left-hander Matt Grace closed the game tossing two hitless innings.
Oregon right-hander Madison Boer (1-6) was tagged with the loss despite allowing three runs and six hits in six innings. Boer registered three strikeouts and issued two walks for the Ducks (14-31, 4-14 Pac-10).
The Bruins were led at the plate by left fielder Gabe Cohen, who went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Right fielder Justin Uribe went 2-for-3 with one pair of singles. Oregon catcher Mitch Karraker led the host Ducks with a 2-for-2 effort.
UCLA claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Cohen opened the frame with a solo home run that nailed the scoreboard structure above the left-center field fence. In the fifth inning, Cohen lined a single to left and scored on shortstop Niko Gallego's double to the gap in right-center field.
Oregon scored one run in the bottom of the fifth. First baseman Darrell Hunter led off the frame with a double to left field and advanced to third on a single to left by second baseman Josh Hogan. A ground-rule double to right field by right fielder Anthony Kreitz plated Hunter from third.
UCLA pushed ahead, 8-1, with a six-run seventh inning. The Bruins took advantage of two singles, four walks, one hit-by-pitch and two wild pitches with a runner at third base. After third baseman Gino Aielli and Gallego walked, catcher Steve Rodriguez loaded the bases with a one-out infield single. A sacrifice bunt by second baseman Eddie Murray scored the inning's first run. Uribe followed with a bases-loaded walk and designated hitter Casey Haerther was hit by a pitch, pushing UCLA's lead to 5-1. Decker's walk scored Rodriguez and two ensuing wild pitches plated Uribe and Haerther. Center fielder Blair Dunlap singled up the middle to score Decker from third base.
