The No. 25 California Golden Bears will compete at the 2009 NCAA Women's Golf West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., Thursday, May 7 through Saturday, May 9. The par-72 6,230 yard course is the setting for the 54-hole (three-round) tournament to advance teams to the NCAA National Championships. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
This is the tenth straight year the Bears have qualified for the NCAA post-season and are looking for their seventh trip to the NCAA National Championships. The Bears last qualified for Nationals in 2006, the freshman season for current seniors Shannon Yocum and Allison Goodman. The Bears placed third at the Regional and went on to finish fifth at the National Championships. Last season, the Bears finished 12th at the Regionals, ending their season at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif.
This season, the Bears go into the Regional as the No. 8 seed in the field of 21 teams. The top eight teams and the top-two individuals not on those teams will advance to the National Championships in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Sophomore Pia Halbig will look to close out her second season strong. Halbig moved up to No. 23 in the individual rankings. Halbig became the first Cal player to be named First Team All-Pac-10 since 2004 and just the sixth overall Bear on the first team. She has five top-10 finishes this spring including tying for ninth at the PING/ASU Invitational on this same course earlier this season and an eighth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships at Stanford.
Seniors Shannon Yocum and Allison Goodman also earned top-100 rankings with Yocum being ranked No. 61 and Goodman right behind her at No. 65. Goodman is averaging 74.8 strokes per round this season and has been a steady contributor for the Bears all season. Yocum missed a month of the spring season with an injury, but came back strong in the Pac-10 Championships, shooting a 69 in her final round to help lead the Bears to a fifth-place finish.
