May 6, 2009
BERKELEY - The California women's soccer team has signed Betsy Hassett to a national letter of intent, Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. The New Zealand native will join the Golden Bears this fall.
'I am extremely pleased to have Betsy join our team,' McGuire said. 'Her experience at the international level will add a great deal to our team dynamic. Betsy is a player who is fast, tenacious, and hard working and has many high-level pieces to her game. She can play both sides of the ball and has a winner's mentality. She will add tremendously to our midfield.'
Hassett was a member of the New Zealand squad in 2008 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup. She played in all three group games including a 4-3 over host Chile a 1-1 draw with England as a 3-2 loss to Nigeria.
Hassett debuted with the senior national team in a 1-0 win over Argentina on June 16, 2008.
The 2008 Bear squad recorded the program's 23rd winning season, finishing 10-9-1 overall and going 3-5-1 in Pac-10 play to finish sixth in the competitive league. The 2008 campaign also saw Cal, which is in its second year under head coach Neil McGuire, earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for its fifth consecutive and 16th overall trip to the postseason.
Most recently, the Bears capped off their spring schedule by winning their annual 7 vs. 7 tournament.
