TEMPE, Ariz. - The #20-ranked Arizona women’s golf team tallied nine birdies as a group on the back nine to finish with an even par score of 288 to share second place after the opening round of the 2009 NCAA West Regional Tournament, Thursday afternoon at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.
Arizona managed to stay away from the big numbers that have plagued the team of late to shoot its best team score of the Spring season and lowest since posting an opening round 282 at the Stanford Intercollegiate in October.
Freshman Isabelle Boineau continued her strong debut season by shooting a team-best 2-under par round of 70 that included five birdies. She came out of the gates strong with back-to-back birdies to start her round, then tallied three more birdies on the back to counter at trio of bogeys on holes 4, 6 and 9 to sit tied for 10th place.
All-Pac-10 performer Alejandra Llaneza was one shot behind her teammate in a tie for 13th position at 1-under for the round. Llaneza made the turn at 1-over after consecutive bogeys on 7 and 8, but she finished the round strong with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17.
Freshman Margarita Ramos snapped out of a two-tournament funk and was even par on the day. She also recorded birdie on the opening hole while also tallying birdie on holes 13 and 14. Senior Amanda Wilson finished her day at 3-over 75 while Nikki Koller ended up one shot behind her veteran teammate.
The Wildcats share second place with Big 12 Conference foes Texas and Texas A&M while four other teams, including Pac-10 rival USC, are just one shot back at 1-over. Host Arizona State leads the way overall at 15-under par while Belen Mozo of USC holds a one shot lead after shooting 6-under par 66.
Round two will tee off for the Wildcats on the 10th hole with Koller leading the way for the team at 11:30 a.m.
