UW Women One Spot Away From Movin On

May 8, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After a solid round on day two, the University of Washington women's golf team has to make up six strokes Saturday claim a spot to the NCAA Championship tournament.

'It's up to us now,' said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'We're right there and we just need to keep improving and we have a chance tomorrow.'

The Huskies, who came in as a No. 14 seed, improved eight strokes from their first-day score, shooting a 300 to combine with Thursday's 308 to finish in a tie with Georgia State University for ninth place at 608. The top eight of 21 teams from each of the three regionals advance to the NCAA Championship. Although the Huskies improved from the first to the second day, and posted one of the better scores on day 2, Mulflur said that she needs to see more improvement out of her squad, if they want to extend their season.

'Assuming the weather is the same tomorrow as it has been today and yesterday -- a non-factor, I'd say that I'd be comfortable with any number that started with a two,' she said. 'At the beginning, I said that I'd be comfortable with a 900.'

Atop the leader board for the Huskies is freshman Sadena Parks, who is tied for 25th place at 7-over, 75-76 151. She is followed by Molly Aronsson at 8-over, 79-73 152, and Anya Alvarez at 153. Christina Yoon is 11-over (155) and Karinn Dickinson is 13-over (157).

UCLA continues to lead the tournament at 2-under (574), and has a pair of players tied at the top spot in Stephanie Kono and Marie Jose Uribe tied at 5-under. The Huskies begin from the 10th tee tomorrow at 9 a.m. E.T. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
