Dawgs Roll To 15-6 Win Over Beavers

May 9, 2009

SEATTLE - A two-out grand slam from sophomore third baseman Julien Pollard highlighted a six-run first inning and Caleb Brown homered and drove in five on the day as the Washington baseball team used its early lead to coast to a 15-6 win over 25th-ranked Oregon State in a Pac-10 game Saturday at Chaffey Field at Husky Ballpark.

On the day that the UW baseball facility was renamed Chaffey Field at Husky Ballpark, in honor of longtime donor Herb Chaffey, the Huskies improved to 22-24 overall and 11-9 in Pac-10 play while the Beavers fell to 29-13 overall and 12-8 in Pac-10 play.

UW senior starter Jason Erickson (4-4) ran his scoreless innings streak to 22 and two-thirds innings before giving up three runs to OSU with two outs in the sixth inning. He ended up allowing six runs on 10 hits over six and two thirds to pick up the win.

In the first, the Huskies made two quick outs before the big rally began. Jake Rife singled, Kyle Conley doubled and Troy Scott walked to load the bases for the first time. Brown, a freshman from Bremerton, followed with a two-run single to open the scoring. After Brett Wilcox was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Pollard belted a fastball over the fence in straightaway right field to make it 6-0. It was his second homer of the season.

In the second, the Husky offensive continued to roll when Brown belted a two-out, three-run homer to center, his third of the year, making it a 9-0 game.

In the third, a bases-loaded groundout from Conley plated a run and, in the fifth, Scott singled home another to make it 11-0.

Erickson, who had thrown shutouts in his last two starts, finally gave up a run in the sixth as OSU designated hitter Adalberto Santos hit a bases-loaded, two-out double to score all three runs.

Pollard continued his solid day in the sixth when he led off with a triple and scored on a groundout from pinch hitter Andy Bethel to make it 12-3.

OSU cut into the lead in the seventh on a three-run homer from Ryan Ortiz before Rife lined a leadoff homer to center, his fifth, to make it 13-6. Back-to-back doubles from Bethel and Brendan Gardner-Young and an RBI single from Rife in the eighth added two more for the Huskies.

Every UW starter, plus Bethel off the bench, had a hit and scored a run in the game. Pollard finished 3-for-5 with four RBI while Rife added three hits and two RBI in five at bats as the Huskies posted a season-high 19 hits.

OSU starter Greg Peavey (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine earned runs on seven hits over one and two-thirds innings.

The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
