Cougar Baseball Knocks Off Oregon

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State collected 11 hits and redshirt-sophomore Chad Arnold pitched seven strong innings as the Cougars defeated Oregon 5-2 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Eight different WSU (24-20, 13-7 Pac-10) batsmen had at least one hit and Arnold (6-2) matched his career-high for innings and strikeouts with seven in both categories.
The Cougars scored first with a three-run second inning. Senior Jared Prince doubled to open the inning and freshman Derek Jones moved Prince to third with a ground ball to second. Junior Michael Weber's infield single scored Prince with the game's first run.
Junior Matt Fanelli followed with a bunt single and sophomore Matt Argyropoulos plated Weber with a double down the right field line. Redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano capped the scoring in the frame with a safety squeeze to the right side.
After Oregon (14-33, 4-16 Pac-10) picked up a run in the fourth and another in the fifth, Ponciano blasted his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to put WSU on top 4-2.
The Cougars picked up an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out double by Jones, a walk to Weber, and a run-scoring single by Fanelli.
Redshirt-junior Jeremy Johnson retired all six men he faced to pick up his eighth save of the season.
The series concludes, Monday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
