May 12, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior Megan Langenfeld was named Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after helping the Bruins to their ninth Pac-10 title last weekend. Langenfeld tossed a pair of four-hit victories, allowing just one run in 14 innings (0.50 ERA) and striking out nine.
Langenfeld was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week on April 14 and Pac-10 Player of the Week on April 28. It is her fourth Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week accolade (May 15, 2007; April 29, 2008) and UCLA's 53rd of all-time. Langenfeld is also the second Bruin to be named Pac-10 POW this season after sophomore Donna Kerr earned the honor on March 3.
On Thursday against the Golden Bears, Langenfeld improved to 13-1 on the season, giving up one run, four hits and one walk. The junior retired eight in a row from the first to the third and struck out a pair in the sixth. After surrendering a solo home run in the sixth, she retired the final six batters to finish out the victory. In the seventh, she battled Vernae Sevilla to a 14-pitch at-bat before finally getting her to fly out to left.
On Friday against the Cardinal, Langenfeld clinched the Pac-10 title with her fourth complete-game shutout of the year. She struck out five and gave up only four hits to move to 14-1 in the circle. The junior cruised through the first five innings, only allowing a leadoff single in the second. In that inning, Langenfeld battled Melisa Koutz to an amazing 32-pitch at-bat, finally striking her out to end the marathon at-bat. Later in the inning, she jammed Maya Burns on a pitch that saw the Stanford player break her bat. She would go on to strikeout Burns to end the second. Langenfeld retired 12 in a row following the hit in the second.
On the year, Langenfeld is 14-1 with a 0.93 earned run average.
The Bruins, seeded second in the NCAA Tournament, open up the postseason on Friday against Long Beach State at 3:30 p.m. at Easton Stadium. Tickets are on sale at the UCLA Central Ticket Office or at 310-UCLA-WIN.
