Washington's Stuart and UCLA's Langenfeld Named Pac-10 Player, Pitcher of the Week
May 12, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- WASHINGTON sophomore third baseman Morgan Stuart and UCLA junior pitcher Megan Langenfeld were named the Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 4-10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Stuart helped the Huskies to their best Conference finish since 2000, as Washington clinched second place in the Pac-10 Conference. The Riverside, Calif., native went 4-for-6 (.667) from the plate, reaching base seven times in nine plate appearances. Hitting a home run in each of Washington's victories, Stuart recorded a 1.667 slugging percentage over the weekend.
On Thursday, Stuart set the tone in the Huskies' 7-2 victory over No. 2 Stanford. The sophomore belted a three-run home run and drove in a career-high five RBI off Cardinal ace Missy Penna. Stuart also batted in a run after singling against Stanford, good for six RBI in one game. Against California on Saturday, the third baseman again was an offensive force, going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and knocking out her fifth home run of the season, as Washington run ruled the Golden Bears, 11-3.
This marks the second career Player of the Week award for Stuart, who was previously honored on Mar. 11, 2008, and the 69th overall for Washington.
Langenfeld pitched the Bruins to their ninth Pac-10 Conference Softball title, throwing a 0.50 ERA on the weekend, striking out nine batters and giving up only eight hits, one run and a walk.
On Friday against the second-ranked Cardinal, the Bakersfield, Calif., native clinched the Pac-10 title with her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. Langenfeld struck out five batters, giving up only four hits, as UCLA bested Stanford 1-0 in six innings. Breezing through the first five innings, Langenfeld battled Stanford batter Melisa Koutz to a marathon 32-pitch at-bat, eventually striking out the Cardinal. The junior is currently 14-1 on the season with a 0.93 ERA.
This marks Langenfeld's third Player of the Week honor this season and sixth overall for her career. UCLA has a total of 111 Player of the Week award winners.
