May 13, 2009
SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team used homers from senior Jake Rife and sophomore Troy Scott to beat Brigham Young, 9-3, Wednesday in a rain-delayed, non-conference game at Chaffey Field at Husky Ballpark.
The game, which got underway at 8:45 p.m., started two hours and 15 minutes late due to rain. It ended at 11:37 p.m.
It was the final home game of the season for the Huskies, who improved to 24-25. BYU dropped to 28-22 in its final game before the Mountain West Conference tournament, which opens next week.
UW starter Forrest Snow struck out eight in his four innings of work, but didn't figure in the decision. Freshman reliever Andrew Kittredge (4-3) entered the game to open the fifth and picked up the win, allowing one run in three innings.
Washington scored the game's first run in the first when Rife hit a two-out solo homer, his sixth of the season.
In the Husky third, Pierce Rankin doubled and Rife walked to put two aboard for Kyle Conley, whose sharp grounder to third was misplayed, with the error allowing one to score. Scott followed with his 10th home run of the season, making it a 5-0 UW lead.
BYU got on the board in the fourth thanks to a two-out, two run homer from shortstop Brandon Relf, cutting the Husky lead to 5-2.
The Huskies added to their tally in the fifth. A bases-loaded, infield single from Brendan Gardner-Young drove in one a bases-loaded walk to Jake Rife forced in another to increase the advantage to 7-2.
In the sixth, BYU's Kent Walton doubled and scored on a Michael Bowen single to add one for the Cougars. In the eighth, the Cougars loaded the bases on a double, a passed ball on a third strike and a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate, but UW freshman Aaron West came on and got Jonathan Cluff to fly out on the first pitch he threw.
The Huskies added two more in the eighth when Caleb Brown drove in two with a single.
BYU starter Blake Torgerson (6-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over three innings.
This Saturday through Monday, the Dawgs face Arizona in a three-game, Pac-10 series in Tucson. Game times are 7:00 p.m. Saturday, 6:00 p.m. Sunday and noon on Monday.
