May 13, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Freshman first baseman Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS) recorded his first career five-hit game, going 5-for-5 with a double and three RBI Wednesday as the USC Trojans beat the Loyola Marymount Lions, 11-2, in a non conference game at Dedeaux Field. Junior shortstop Grant Green went 4-for-5 with a double and one RBI while junior designated hitter Robert Stock hit two home runs in a game for the first time in his career, both solo shots.
Oropesa became the first Trojan to record five hits in a game since Blake Sharpe accomplished the feat in 2005 (March 12 vs. Wichita State). Green had four hits in a game for the fourth time in his career (three times in 2008).
Andrew Triggs (5-3) got the win for USC (24-25) in the predetermined start, throwing four scoreless innings with two hits, three walks and one strikeout. Jordan McClintick took the loss for Loyola Marymount (29-25), allowing five runs in four innings.
Joe De Pinto singled in the bottom half of the first and Green doubled to right. Oropesa followed with a two-run single to center. Stock led off the second and fourth innings with solo home runs, numbers five and six on the season, as USC had the 5-0 lead after four innings.
The Lions, who stranded 14 runners in the game, scored a run in the fifth on Angelo Songco's RBI single off reliever Chad Smith. The Trojans responded with two in the second and three in the sixth to put the game away.
USC hosts Stanford in a Pac-10 Conference series, Friday-Sunday (May 17-19). Friday and Saturday's games starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live via video webcast on usctrojans.com.
