Men's Golf Concludes Day One at NCAA Regional

May 14, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore – The Oregon State men’s golf team finished the opening round of the NCAA West Regional at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. Thursday, and is currently sitting in 13th place.

The Beavers started well teeing off the 10th tee where they made the turn at 1-under par. The front-nine proved to be more of a challenge for the team where they posted a team score of 13-over.

“We turned the front nine and I think we were one or 2-under par,” Oregon State men’s golf head coach Brian Watts said following the opening day round. “We played well most of the day and finished poorly. I believe we played the last three or four holes at 10-over par.”

Alex Williams and Diego Velasquez both had 2-over 74s during the opening round and are tied for 49th. Williams was even going into his final three holes but made bogey on his 16th and 17th holes of the day.

Velasquez was 1-under through his first six holes before making bogey on his seventh hole to make the first round turn at even par. He then birdied the par-5 sixth to go back to 1-under going into his final three holes where he shot bogey and double bogey on his 16th and 17th holes to finish at 2-over.

Morten Madsen posted the only eagle for the Beavers on the par-5 14th hole which quickly brought him to 3-under through five holes. He then shot 7-over on his next 12 holes before making birdie on his final hole of the day, the par-5 ninth. He finished at 3-over and is tied for 53rd.

Alex Moore went 5-over on the day while Paul Peterson went seven over and are tied for 67th and 72nd respectively going into the second round.

“Tomorrow’s game plan will be to go out and play more aggressively,” Watts said. “It will be a day that hopefully yields a lot of birdies or it’s going to yield a lot of bogeys. We dug ourselves a big hole today and we need to make a move.”

Arizona State leads all schools at 9-under par through the first day while Matthew Giles of Southern California leads all individuals at 7-under.

Oregon State will be teeing off the second round at 8:30 a.m. and can be followed live online by visiting Golfstat.com.
