No. 15 Men's Rowing Prepares for Pac-10 Championships
May 14, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. -
The Oregon State men's crew will face three of the top six crews in the country when they travel to Rancho Cordova, Calif. to make a run at the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday, May 17.
'The Pac-10 teams have been amongst the best all season,' head coach Steve Todd said. 'So it will be a real test for us.'
The Beavers will take three crews to Lake Natoma, led by its 15th-ranked Varsity 8+ boat. They will be facing off against six other crews in total including three that are ranked in the top six of the May 14 release of the USRowing Collegiate Poll. The Beavers have gained experience against all three of the elite crews, racing No. 2 Washington three times this season, as well as No. 3 California and No. 6 Stanford twice each. In particular, Oregon State will have its eyes set on the Cardinal, who they came within two seconds of knocking off in a dual race on April 19. Joining the four ranked crews will be boats from UCLA, USC, and Washington State. The V8+ race is currently scheduled to take place at 3 p.m.
'We have made some good improvements over the past two weeks,' Todd said. 'On Sunday the Varsity will have to get out on Lake Natoma and execute their race, be fully focused on what they can do and have their best effort of the year.'
Oregon State will also take a Junior Varsity 8+ crew to compete against four other crews from Pac-10 schools. Washington, California, Stanford and Washington State will match up against the Beavers in a race that is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Racing in the largest field of the day will be the Oregon State Freshman 8+ crew. In addition to crews from Washington, California, Stanford, Washington State, UCLA and USC, the Beavers will also get an opportunity to battle Civil War rival Oregon in a race that begins at 1:50 p.m.
All crews will be in for a day of blistering heat, with temperatures expected to climb over 100 degrees with very little wind.
Up-to-date split times from the racing at the Pac-10 Championships will be provided by Jamco. In addition, the Pac-10 will be streaming live video of the races from their website at www.pac-10.org.
