Cal 3 Shots off Pace for NCAA Championships Slot after 2nd Regional Round
May 15, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas - The Golden Bears gained significant ground in their pursuit of a top-5 finish at The University of Texas Golf Club, ending Friday three strokes off the pace for an NCAA Championships berth with 18 holes to play Saturday at the Southwest Regional. Eric Mina's even-par 71, which left him tied for 9th at 3-over after 2 rounds, was matched by teammate John Murphy as California fired a top-5 round amid the 13-team field.
Host Texas shot 1-over as a team on Thursday to take a 2-shot lead over Texas Tech, with the Longhorns' Lance Lopez still the top individual after his 3-under 69 put him at -5.
Mina birdied his first two holes to jump out of the gate in round two, adding two more birds to negate his four bogies. Murphy (T18th, +5) had a similar round of three birdies against three bogeys.
George Gandranata had a double bogey overshadow his three-birdie, three-bogey round, leaving him tied for 34th.
Jensen and Hale are also tied with Clay Myers of Jackson State, who had a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth hole using a 4-iron from 215 yards.
Play resumes with the final round tomorrow morning and live scoring available at NCAA.com and Golfstat.com. Cal, the sixth seed, is making its 11th NCAA appearance in the last 13 years and the 14th overall regional appearance for the Bears.
