Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Adalberto Santos went 3-for-5 and hit two home runs, but it was not enough as the Oregon State baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision to Washington State in front of 2,749 Friday night at Goss Stadium.

Santos hit home runs to both right and left field in the game and became the first Oregon State hitter to homer twice in a game since Drew George against Pacific on March 10 of last season. The Oregon State designated hitter drove in two runs and scored three while collecting his 11th multi-hit game of the season.

Ryan Ortiz also came through with a three-hit game and homered for the third time this season, it coming in the third inning. The long ball was the eighth of his career and the multi-hit effort was his team-leading 21st of the season.

Jared Norris went 3-for-3 with three singles to extend his hitting streak to six games. The first baseman scored the Beavers' first run of the game in the second inning, scoring on a John Tommasini sacrifice fly. The effort marked Norris' eighth multi-hit game of the season.

Ryan Gorton came on in relief for starter Tanner Robles and pitched 4 2/3 innings in his ninth appearance of the season. It is the third time that Gorton has pitched more than four innings in an outing.

Josh Osich relieved Gorton in the eighth inning and did not allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings pitched. The Oregon State lefty has held opponents scoreless in 11 of his 13 outings this season.

Robles allowed eight hits and six runs in three innings of work to drop to 1-2 this season.

Matt Way got the start for the Cougars and went 6 1/3 innings to pick up his eighth win of the season. Garry Kuykendall went 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Jared Prince went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs for Washington State.

With the Beavers trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Ortiz came to the plate with one out and drove the offering from Way over the right-center fence to score Oregon State's second run of the game. Two batters later, Santos hit an opposite field home run down the right field line to cut the Cougars' lead to 4-3.

Santos also came up big in the sixth inning with a leadoff single up the middle. He followed that with his team-leading ninth stolen base of the year and advanced to third on a throwing error by Cougars' catcher Greg Lagreid. Norris drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left field to score the Beavers' fourth run of the game.

With the Beavers trailing by a score of 7-5, Santos led the eighth inning off by lifting the first pitch he saw from Washington State reliever Jeremy Johnson over the left field wall to bring the Beavers within one. Norris and Rob Folsom reached base in the Beavers next to at-bats to put the go-ahead run on first base, but Oregon State could not come through and the next six hitters were retired successfully by Johnson.

Oregon State and Washington State continue the three-game series Saturday at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.

Oregon State Notes: The three-home run effort was the first for Oregon State since its contest with Pacific on May 23 last season ... The game is the Beavers' second multi-home run game of the season, with the last coming against Northern Illinois on February 26 ... With a runner on first and no outs in the top of the fifth, Washington State's Michael Weber drove a ball into left-center that was tracked down by OSU left fielder Rob Folsom, who made a diving catch to rob Weber and made a strong throw back to John Tommasini, who threw to first to double off Jay Ponciano for a double play.
