Senior Tom Glissmeyer fired a 4-under 68 while sophomores Tim Sluiter was also under par as the No. 3 USC men's golf team used a bit of a late rally to remain among the top 5 on the second day of the NCAA West Regional on Friday (May 15) at the Lake Merced G.C. in Daly City, Calif.
A combined 81 teams are playing concurrently at six NCAA regions and only the top five out of each field will advance to the NCAA Championships final, May 26-30, at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
USC is now a combined 7-under 569 (285-284), 15 shots behind first-place Arizona State (554-279-2745). Oregon used a big second-round to move into second at 16-under 560 (282-278). San Diego is third at 10-under 566 (288-278) while Texas A&M is fourth at 9-under 567 (281-286). USC is fifth at 7-under with San Francisco in sixth at 5-under 571 (291-280). New Mexico (-4) and San Diego State (-3) are also in the hunt for a top 5 finish.
Glissmeyer, par on Thursday, improved on Friday and is now tied for 10th at 4-under 140 (72-68). On a great day, he birdied 6, eagled 14 and finished the round off with a birdie on 18 with nothing but pars in between. It was his seventh round in the 60s this year.
Sluiter rebounded from a 5-over Thursday and is now tied for 49th at 3-over 147 (77-70). He was even through nine holes before birdying four of the final eight holes (against a double bogey) to finish 2-under on the back 9.
Matt Giles, hard-pressed to match his 65 on Thursday, carded a par 72 on Friday and remains 7-under at 137 (65-72). Giles was par both going out and coming in with three birdies against three bogeys. He is in second place, three shots off the lead.
Freshman Steve Lim followed his opening round 72 with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 42nd at 2-over 146 (72-74). He birdied the fifth hole, bogeyed three straight from 8-10, but settled down to sink pars the rest of the way.
Junior Jamie Lovemark is now 75th at 15-over 159 (76-83).
The event concludes Saturday.
