USC Rally Falls Short In 8-6 Loss Against Stanford
May 15, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Drew Storen recorded three consecutive strikeouts in the ninth Friday after allowing a grand slam as the Stanford Cardinal held on for the 8-6 Pac-10 Conference win over the USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. Stanford used a six-run third inning to pace the victory despite the Trojan rally.
Jordan Pries pitched eight solid innings for the Cardinal (28-21, 11-11), giving up five runs on nine hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Three of the runs Pries allowed came in the ninth as Storen came on to record his eighth save on the year.
Anthony Vasquez took the loss for USC (24-26, 10-12), allowing six runs on 11 hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He hit the grand slam off Storen, going 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and four RBI while Joe De Pinto added three hits.
Vasquez tripled off the fence in right to lead off the USC half of the second, later scoring on Hector Rabago's infield single before the Cardinal answered with six the following inning.
Jake Schlander singled and Colin Walsh was hit by a Vasquez pitch. Joey August then bunted down the third base line and Vasquez's throw went wide of the bag as Schlander's run tied the game. Toby Gerhart then drilled a two-run double to center as Stanford took the 3-1 lead. Kellen Kiilsgaard followed with an RBI single, later advancing to second on Jeff Whitlow's single. Zach Jones plated Kiilsgaard with a single to right and Adam Gaylord's sacrifice attempt was booted by Vasquez for his second error of the inning as the Cardinal was staked to the 6-1 score.
Mike O'Neill got one back for the Trojans with a solo homer in the third, his second of the season, but Pries then struck out De Pinto and Grant Green before getting Ricky Oropesa to line out. USC put the leadoff hitter aboard in the fifth and sixth innings, but Pries induced double plays to keep the Trojans off the board.
Schlander, who had three hits on the night, singled in the ninth off reliever Ryan Cabral and stole second. August brought home Schlander with the RBI single as the Cardinal would load the bases. Whitlow hit a ground ball to Green at short, who went for the bag at second, but Brent Milleville beat Green to the base as all runners were safe with the Cardinal leading by the 8-2 margin.
De Pinto singled in the bottom of the ninth, followed by Green's double down the third base line. Pries walked Oropesa to load the bases before making way for Storen. After falling behind 1-2 in the count, Vasquez launched his sixth homer of the season with the slam to right before Storen shut down the Trojans in order.
The USC-Stanford series continues tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. series finale on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live via video webcast on usctrojans.com.
