Inika McPherson Captures Pac-10 High Jump Title
May 16, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. -
Senior Inika McPherson captured the 2009 Pac-10 High Jump title on Saturday at the Pac-10 Championships on the Oregon campus. In addition to McPherson's performance, numerous Bears advanced through Saturday's prelims to Sunday's finals in their respective events. At the end of Day One, the Cal men are in eighth with 15 points through eight events, while the Cal women are in ninth with 11 points through seven events.
McPherson's first-place jump was 5-11.25 (1.81m), just shy of her season-best mark of 1.83m.
'Inika has been on the cusp of greatness for quite some time,' said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. 'She's been slowed a bit by injuries, but she's a tough competitor and she's been jumping well as of late. She beat some good people today. I respect what she has done.'
Another impressive performance came from junior Kimyon Broom in the 100-meter hurdles. Broom, the 2008 Pac-10 champion in that event, clocked a wind-aided time of 13.03 to take first in the prelims. Her school-record time of 13.08 remains the record because her time today was wind-aided.
'It was a dominating win today for Kimyon,' Sandoval said. 'She's actually a little bit under the weather right now, so we're going to do our best to get her ready for tomorrow.'
One of the events where Cal scored today came in the men's and the women's shot put, led by sophomore Patrick Kowalsky and redshirt freshman Linda Oseso. Oseso set a new personal best with her throw of 45-01.00 (13.74m), placing eighth overall and picking up Cal's other point to go with the 10 earned by McPherson. Kowalsky picked up three points with his sixth-place finish (55-05.50, 16.90m).
'Linda got a big PR today and Pat's throw was huge for us,' Sandoval said. 'For two walk-ons to score in throws here with a field that's really loaded is fantastic. It's a rare and commendable accomplishment.'
Junior Ryan Young and senior Martin Maric earned the Golden Bears a combined seven points in the javelin. Young came in fifth with a mark of 221-02 (67.42m) to collect four points, while Maric took sixth (216-09, 66.07m) to earn three points.
Sophomore Kyle Mills-Bunje got Cal's other five points in last week's decathlon.
The Pac-10 Championships conclude tomorrow.
