Men's Golf And Jesper Kennegard Cruise To NCAA West Regional Titles

Led by individual medalist Jesper Kennegard, the men's golf team carded a final-round 14-under par 274 en route to capturing the2009 NCAA West Regional Championships that concluded Saturday at the par-72, 6,849-yard Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.

The Sun Devils finished the 54-hole tournament at 36-under par 828 toregister a nine-shot victory over Oregon, which totaled a 27-under parscore of 837. Texas A&M posted a tournament-best score of 15-under par273 to finish third with a 24-under par total of 840.

San Diego (849) and USC (853) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, toearn the region's final two spots into the NCAA Championships scheduledfor May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

'We just hit a week where everything fell into place for us,' ArizonaState head coach Randy Lein said, who has now guided ASU to the NCAA Championships in 16 of his 17 years at the helm of the program, tied for the second-best mark in in that time (1993-2009). 'Our ball striking was good, we madesome putts and shot some good scores. We got some happy Sun Devils.'

Arizona State was paced by Kennegard, who finished first with a 12-underpar 204, one shot ahead of Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon (205) and threeshots ahead of teammates Knut Borsheim and Chan Kim. Both players turnedin scores of 9-under par 207.

Kennegard shot sub-par rounds all three days, while Kim play the lasttwo rounds bogey-free and 8-under.

'I played pretty solid during the week. I started off pretty bad thismorning at the par-3 three,' Kennegard said. 'The wind changed on me andI came up short and made double-bogey but after that I was into it andplayed solid.'
