May 16, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Brett Mooneyham threw a complete game and struck out a career-high 11 batters Saturday as the Stanford Cardinal beat the USC Trojans, 9-1, to take the Pac-10 Conference series at Dedeaux Field. Mooneyham scattered seven hits and allowed four walks in the victory for Stanford (29-21, 12-11).
Kellen Kiilsgaard and Jeff Whitlow had two hits and two RBI each for the Cardinal while Toby Gerhart had three hits with a double. Stanford turned four double plays in the game.
Joe De Pinto and Ashton Kent led the Trojans (24-27, 10-13) with two hits each as USC looks to avoid the series sweep tomorrow. Robert Stock (3-4) took the loss after allowing six runs in four innings of work with four walks and one strikeout.
Four consecutive singles in the third provided three runs for the Cardinal, capped by Whitlow's RBI single to right. The Trojans scored its lone run in the bottom of the third on Joe De Pinto's single.
Adam Gaylord led off the Stanford fourth with a double and a walk by Stock to Colin Walsh put runners at the corners. A balk called against Stock brought home the Cardinal's fourth run and Kiilsgaard later plated Walsh with the single to right for the 5-1 advantage.
Mooneyham was able to cruise through the middle innings as double plays finished the Trojans in the fourth, sixth and seventh. USC put runners at first and second with an out in the ninth, but Mooneyham came back to induce a fly out from Billy Pinkerton and struck out Garret Houts to end the game.
