Beaver's No. 15 Men's Crew Races to Fourth Place Finish at Pac-10 Championships

May 17, 2009

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Facing three top-six crews and temperatures that reached 100 degrees, the Oregon State men's crew raced to two fourth-place and one fifth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships on Lake Natoma on Sunday.

The Beaver's 15th-ranked Varsity 8+ crew faced the daunting task of taking on three top-six crews in its heat of seven boats. The first 500 meters saw No. 3 California take a slim lead over No. 2 Washington, while No. 6 Stanford was less than one second behind. Oregon State found itself holding a small lead over UCLA for fourth place, which the Beavers were able to expand to 1.75 seconds at the 1,000-meter mark. That margin reached 7.21 seconds as the Beavers crossed the finish line in fourth place.

In the Junior Varsity 8+ race, Oregon State found itself alone in fourth place after the first 500 meters, 6.6-seconds behind third-place Stanford and 7.3-seconds ahead of fifth-place Washington State. Those margins continued to grow over the course of the race and the Beavers ended with another fourth place finish.

The Freshman 8+ led off the day in a rare eight boat heat. Washington used a strong start to give itself a lead and pulled away from second-place California through the rest of the race. The Beavers were locked in a tight battle with Stanford and Washington State for third through the first 500 meters. As the race developed Stanford strengthened its hold on third, while Oregon State was overtaken by the Cougars and settled for a fifth place finish, over 22-seconds ahead of sixth place UCLA.
