Two Boats Medal for Beavers in Pac-10 Regatta

May 17, 2009

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The Oregon State Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ boats each finished third at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships Sunday. All four of OSU's boats enjoyed strong races throughout the day and qualified to the Grand Finals.

The bronze medal finish for the V8+ is the highest finish for the Beavers since the 2000 season when the varsity boat finished third and qualified to the NCAA Championships.

'I couldn't be more proud of this team,' head coach Emily Ford said. 'Every boat raced their brains out and that all we can ask. I'm very thrilled that they got to see the fruits of their labor this year.'

The Beavers' 13th ranked V8+ struggled to a slow start in the Grand Final, reaching the 500-meter mark in last place. Slowly but surely, the Beavers inched their way up in the field posting some of the fastest splits through the rest of the race. At the 1,000-meter mark had put Washington State in the rearview and at the 1,500-meter mark OSU had eased past USC. The Beavers continued to move up late in the race as they proved to be the fastest boat over the final 500 meters as they passed Washington to erase a two-second deficit during the final leg.

Earlier in the afternoon, in the first Grand Final of the day, the OSU N8+ also earned a bronze medal finish. The Beavers reached the 500-meter mark leading a four-way battle for third place with Washington State, Stanford and USC while Washington and California had surged to the early lead. OSU steadily pulled ahead eventually putting open water between them and the competition.

OSU's Varsity 4+ used the same blueprint as the V8+ getting off the starting line behind the field, then used the rest of the race to recover. At the 1,000-meter mark, the Beavers had caught UCLA but still trailed Stanford by 1.5 seconds and Washington by nearly five seconds while USC and California were pulling away from the field. During the final 1,000 meters though, Oregon State covered the course faster than everybody but USC. Despite the final push, the Beavers came up just .2-seconds short of UW and another spot on the medal stand.

Preliminary heat racing Sunday morning was just as successful as the main events of the afternoon. OSU's N8+ went wire-to-wire to win the heat and beating WSU by 3.5-seconds.

In OSU's V8+ heat, Stanford swiftly established the lead leaving the Beavers a second-place battle with USC. Trailing the Women of Troy by nearly four seconds at the midway point, the Beavers erased that deficit in the next 500 meters to go into the final leg of the race bow-to-bow. Showing superior speed in the final 500m, the Beavers ran away to beat USC to the finish by nearly five seconds.

The V4+ head had a similar flavor to most of OSU's races, with the Beavers easing off the start line in third place before establishing themselves as the fastest boat the rest of the way. It took until the final 500 meters to get by Stanford, but the Beavers finished second in the heat, just one second behind Washington.

In the Beavers' 2V8+ heat, California and Washington quickly raced out to a dominant lead. Meanwhile, OSU raced bow-to-bow with UCLA in the early going before passing the Bruins in the second 500m. The Beavers clung to the third position through the rest of the race to earn a berth in the Grand Final.

Due to technical problems, OSU's 2V8+ results are unavailable (fifth place finish). Check back for results.
