BERKELEY - No. 11-ranked Jana Juricova helped lead the Golden Bears to a pair of crucial victories in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship over the weekend, winning all four of her matches to make the freshman the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week for the third time this year.
In the Round of 16, Juricova helped take Cal to a 4-0 victory over No. 8 Georgia Tech by overpowering No. 12-ranked Irina Falconi at the top court in a 6-0, 6-4 win. The next match out, Juricova's stunningly easy 6-4, 6-1 against the top-ranked Maria Mosolova of Northwestern buoyed the Bears to a 4-2 win over top-seeded Northwestern. The win was Cal's 10th in a row and sent the Bears to the NCAA semifinal for the third consecutive year.
Juricova also teamed up with sophomore Mari Andersson to help the Bears win the doubles point in each match. The duo won their 19th and 20th matches together to stay atop the team leaderboards with an 8-2 win over No. 30-ranked Noelle Hickey and Christy Striplin of Georgia Tech; and 8-6 over No. 24-ranked Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose of Northwestern.
Juricova is the only Cal player with at least 30 singles and doubles wins. She is second on the team with a 36-6 singles record and tops on the team with a 31-8 doubles record.
