Cal Named to 16-Team Field at NCAA Rowing Championships
May 19, 2009
BERKELEY - California was one of 16 teams named to the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships on Tuesday by the NCAA office. The national regatta, hosted by Villanova, is scheduled to take place May 29-30 at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Golden Bears hosted the NCAA Divisions I, II and III Women's Rowing Championships last year, when they finished third overall and fourth in the varsity 8+ grand final at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
'We were pretty confident we'd be selected, but it's good to get the confirmation,' Cal head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'It looks to be a really strong field, and our team is right in the thick of things. It should be a great regatta.'
The Bears are coming off a Pac-10 team championship on May 17 in Gold River, where Cal's second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ boats also won conference crowns. Cal's varsity 8+, currently ranked No. 2 in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, and the Bears' novice 8+ each finished second at the conference regatta.
The other Pac-10 teams in the NCAA field are Washington, Stanford, Oregon State and USC. The rest of the field consists of Brown, Clemson, Dartmouth, Harvard, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Princeton, Virginia, Wisconsin and Yale.
There were no at-large boats selected to this year's NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships.
Last season, Brown won the overall team title and Yale won the varsity 8+ crown at Lake Natoma.
