DURHAM, N.C. - UCLA freshman right-hander Trevor Bauer has been invited to the 2009 USA Baseball National Team Trials, slated to take place from June 15-24 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Bauer joins 28 other talented college players, including UCLA teammate and fellow freshman Gerrit Cole, who have been selected as national team trials invitees.
The National Team Trials will be comprised of 36 collegiate players vying for a spot on the final 22-man roster, to be announced June 24.
'Trevor has pitched as well as any freshman in the country,' UCLA head coach John Savage said. 'He is a very young pitcher with a tremendous future at UCLA. He has stepped in this spring and pitched at a very high level.'
Bauer currently leads UCLA with eight wins (8-3 record), a team-low 2.90 ERA and a team-high 96.1 innings. Bauer ranks second in the Pac-10 in innings pitched, tied for second in wins (8), sixth in strikeouts (87) and ERA (2.90) and ninth in opponent batting average (.227). Bauer leads UCLA with three complete games this season.
Bauer and Cole are two of nine freshmen who have been invited to the USA Baseball National Team Trials. The other seven freshmen who have been selected, to date, include Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt), Danny Hultzen (Virginia), Matt Jensen (Cal Poly), Anthony Rendon (Rice), Jeremy Schaffer (Tulane), Logan Verrett (Baylor) and Tony Zych (Louisville).
The 2009 team will be coached by Tulane head coach Rick Jones, who previously served as an assistant coach for Team USA on the 1989 Presidential Cup Team and 1990 National Team. Jones is joined by pitching coach Mike Kennedy (head coach, Elon) and assistant coaches Dan McDonnell (head coach, Louisville) and Rob Cooper (head coach, Wright State; 2007 USA Baseball National Team assistant coach).
