USC Wins In The Ninth With 5-4 Decision Over UC Riverside
May 19, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Junior left fielder Mike O'Neill (Riverside/Poly HS) went 5-for-5 with a triple, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday, as the USC Trojans beat the UC Riverside Highlanders, 5-4, in a non conference game at Dedeaux Field. O'Neill registered his first career five-hit game and scored on a Justin Kelly wild pitch after he hit a triple off the fence in right center.
UC Riverside fell to 31-19 on the season.
The Trojans used three consecutive singles to lead off the first as Grant Green singled home O'Neill from third for the first run. Ricky Oropesa lifted a sacrifice fly to center, followed by Anthony Vasquez's RBI double to left. After an error by UCR second baseman Bryan Horst allowed Hector Rabago to reach first, Vasquez later scored on Ryan Platt's wild pitch as USC took the 4-0 lead.
The Highlanders cut the lead in the half during the third. Trevor Hairgrove singled and scored on Carl Uhl's triple to right center. Michael Hur brought Uhl home with a groundout to first. Horst hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 4-3 advantage. Tony Nix later tied in the game in the eighth with an RBI single off Vasquez, who came in from center to relieve Triggs.
Stock then struck out Horst, Hairgrove and Uhl in order before the Trojans' heroics in the ninth. With one out, O'Neill launched a fly ball off Matt Larkins that almost missed going over the fence. Kelly entered the game and walked Joe De Pinto to put runners at first and third. With Green at the plate, Kelly uncorked a wild pitch that bounced to the backstop and allowed O'Neill to score in the Trojans' final home game of the 2009 season.
USC concludes the regular season with a Pac-10 Conference series at California, Friday-Sunday (May 22-24), with Friday's game being broadcast on Fox Sports Net. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
