OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The #20-ranked Arizona women’s golf team got off to a rough start and ended up shooting 310 to sit in 15th place after 18 holes of the 28th Annual NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships, Tuesday afternoon at the Caves Valley Golf Club.
Teeing off on the 10th hole in the morning flight, the Wildcats managed just two birdies on that side of the course, both from freshman Nikki Koller, while suffering three double bogeys and ending up 15-over par on that half of the course to finish at +22 on the day.
Freshman Isabelle Boineau responded by shooting 1-under on the front side while senior Amanda Wilson was just a shot over par. Wilson led the way for Arizona by shooting a 4-over round of 76 while Boineau is a shot behind her teammate.
Freshman Margarita Ramos shot 78 in her first championship round, finishing 3-over on each side of the course, while Koller ended up with a round of 79. Sophomore Alejandra Llaneza rounded out the five-person team with a total of 83.
The University of Denver is the surprise leader after one round of play, finishing at 6-over 294 while UCLA (+8) is in second place. Catherine O’Donnell of North Carolina and Stephanie Sherlock from Denver share the individual lead after carding 2-under rounds of 70.
