Women's Rowing Invited to NCAA Championships
May 19, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Oregon State women's rowing team, ranked 13th in the nation, has been invited to compete at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The championship regatta, hosted by Villanova University at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, N.J., is scheduled for May 29-31.
The announcement marks the first time the Beavers have qualified for the NCAA Championships since 2000. Three boats - the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ - will compete on the East Coast next weekend.
'It is a great day to be a Beaver,' third-year head coach Emily Ford said. 'The members of this team are fine representatives of how we do things here at Oregon State - they work hard and they work as a team. The twenty-three athletes that will be competing for us on the water have raised the bar, and I give a ton of credit to the other athletes on the team who have been pushing them all year, as well as to the alums that started moving the wheel three years ago. This opportunity is the result of many years of hard work, not just one.'
OSU's V8+ will be the first boat to hit the water for the Beavers, Friday, May 29 at 9 a.m. in the second of three heat races. The Beavers will face a field that includes California, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Brown.
The 2V8+ is scheduled to follow at 9:30 a.m. in the division's first heat against Virginia, Ohio State, Washington and Harvard.
Finally, the 1V4+ takes the water at 11:15 a.m. in the second heat to face USC, Ohio State, Clemson and Wisconsin.
'Undoubtedly we will pause to enjoy this moment, but then it's back to work,' Ford said. 'Qualifying is a great step, but our goal all along has been to put our best foot forward at the championship. I look forward to seeing how far we can take it.'
