May 20, 2009
STANFORD, Calif.- Pushed to three sets for just the second time over the last three months, sophomore Hilary Barte prevailed in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Baylor's Lenka Broosova on Wednesday morning in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship at College Station, Texas.
Ranked No. 7 in the country and the tournament's No. 7 overall seed, Barte rallied for a win over Broosova, who knocked out Barte by a 6-3, 6-2 count in the second round of last year's NCAA Singles Championship. Broosova, ranked No. 33 nationally, plays primarily at the No. 2 spot for the Lady Bears despite entering Wednesday's contest with one of the club's better records while riding a 20-match winning streak.
Wednesday's result for Barte was almost identical to her first round match from last year, when she hung on for a three-set victory over UNLV's Elena Gantcheva 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Barte is aiming for the second All-America honor of her career. The Chatsworth, Calif., native leads Stanford with a 34-5 overall mark. Playing all of her dual matches at the No. 1 position, Barte has won 25 of her last 27 matches overall and is 22-5 against nationally-ranked opponents. She is now 6-3 in three-set matches this year.
Barte will face Auburn's Alex Haney on Thursday, May 21, in the Round of 16. Ranked No. 28 in the nation, Haney defeated USC's Maria Sanchez 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.
