Women's Golf Moves Up to Fourth at NCAA Championships
May 20, 2009
The Arizona State women's golf team finished day two of the NCAA Championships tied for fourth. The Sun Devils shot a 24-over 600 (302-298) at the par 72, 6,443-yard Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The team is 11 shots behind leader UCLA.
'I think in order for the team to do well, we've got to post at least two scores under par and a couple others around par and boom! we jump right back up,' said seventh year head coach Melissa Luellen.
Azahara Munoz shook off her first round struggles and started the morning sinking a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-4 10th Hole. She went on to make two more birdies on the back nine and one on the front, finishing the day at 1-under 71. After two rounds, Munoz is 5-over 149 (78-71) to tie for 16th.
'I was thrilled for Aza to come back and show her experience and her ability to rebound,' said Luellen on the reigning NCAA Champion. 'As an individual, she's not out of this tournament. This is the kind of golf course where anything can happen.'
Jennifer Osborn is currently tied with fellow senior Munoz. Osborn carded a 2-over 74 in the second round to finish with a two-day total of 5-over 149 (75-74). She finished the day making a nice up-and-down for par on Hole 9.
'I think Jennifer Osborn is being a great senior and is being extremely patient,' said Luellen. 'She shared with the team that they need to put the bad shots behind them and to stay patient.'
Carlota Ciganda struggled on the front nine. After two rounds, Ciganda has shot a 6-over 150 (74-76) and is currently tied for 20th. Jaclyn Sweeney and Juliana Murcia both shot 5-over in the second round. Sweeney is currently tied for 48th at 9-over 153 (76-77). After struggling during the morning's first nine holes, Murcia fought back, knocking in three birdies on the front nine. Murcia is currently 10-over 154 (77-77).
The Sun Devils tee off on Hole 1 tomorrow at noon ET. They will be paired with Oklahoma State and North Carolina.
