No. 7 Andersson and Juricova Advance to NCAA Doubles Title Match

May 24, 2009

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 7-ranked California women's tennis doubles team of sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 13 Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova of Baylor in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Doubles Championship semifinal on Sunday (May 24) at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The top Golden Bear duo will face No. 8-ranked Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette of Stanford for the third time this season to decide the national title in an 8 a.m. PT match on Monday, May 25. The two teams split meetings earlier this year with Cal winning, 9-8, at Stanford and the Cardinal pair winning, 8-4, at Cal.

Cal stormed out of the gates to break the Baylor serve twice and held a two-break lead at 4-0 before Broosova's serve earned BU its first game. After enduring 12 deuce points and fighting off several game-point rallies in the fifth game, two consecutive botched Cal service returns put Baylor on the board. BU jumped on the momentum train to get out to a 40-15 lead on Juricova's serve in the next game but Cal fought back to earn deuce. Borsanyi put a ball into the net to set Cal up with the advantage before Andersson hit a winner to bring Cal a 5-1 lead. Borsanyi held serve next to bring Baylor within three games at 5-2. BU stood fast to break Andersson's serve in the next game to set Broosova up with a chance to bring her team to within one break of a tie. Broosova held to win the ninth game. Baylor went into the 10th game down, 5-4, with Juricova set to serve.

In the 10th game, facing triple break point, Juricova's serves forced two consecutive return errors. Broosova's baseline rally with Juricova proved to be hazardous as Broosova hit a shot long to bring Cal all the way from triple break point to deuce. BU took the first advantage but Juricova fought off another rally with Broosova as she went crosscourt on backhand to earn deuce once more. Juricova's next serve was too much to handle for Borsanyi, who returned it long to give Cal set point. Juricova's next serve went straight down the center of the court to force Broosova to lunge at the ball. The return went into the net to give Cal the 6-4 win.

Cal opened the second set by breaking Borsanyi's serve as Andersson blasted a shot into no man's land to catch Baylor standing still. BU responded by breaking Juricova's serve with ease to knot the set at one-all before Broosova's serve caught fire to finish off a 40-love game, giving Baylor a 2-1 lead on serve. Andersson had her serve broken in the fourth game to surrender a two-break advantage with Borsanyi serving for a 4-1 lead. Instead, Cal broke the Baylor serve the next two times with Juricvoa holding to take a 4-3 lead. Andersson helped Cal go ahead 5-3 on her serve to put the Berkeley Bears in on the verge of a win.

The first point of the final game went to Cal. Borsanyi couldn't get a serve to stay in bounds as she put Baylor in a love-30 hole on her double fault. Baylor continued to fight and earned a point on Broosova's volley to make the score 15-30. Cal brushed off the setback to earn double match-point on Andersson's crosscourt-backhand return of Borsanyi's serve. Borsanyi found herself in a rally with Anderrson on the baseline as she lobbed up a floater that Andersson's slammed back into the Baylor court. Borsanyi's return went into net to end the match with Cal winning 6-4, 6-3.

The win was the sixth in a row for Andersson and Juricova who pushed their record to 24-3 together. This is the first appearance for Cal in the NCAA doubles championship match since Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano won the title in 2003.
